November Update/PTD Reissue Reviews

Howdy, folks! Over here in Blue Diamond Land, we've been working as usual on new songs and various projects. For example, on Friday, we're playing a Replacements tribute show at First Avenue (the main room, friends. The MAIN room!). Those songs don't learn themselves... not even "Treatment Bound"...

Live At Grumpy's is now on track for a late winter 2016 release on ADD Records. "Is there a chance the track could bend?" "Not on your life, my rocker friends!" Anyway, we're gettin' it done!

We've had some reviews of the Promises To Deliver deluxe reissue on Rum Bar come in as of late, and they're all pretty damn positive! Well, what I can I say... we like it, too. I've collected a few, for you to read/discuss:

Faster And Louder (scroll down to November 9th)

Jersey Beat (you'll need to scroll down a bit)

VERY in-depth review at Real Gone

Carolina Orange

Rat Boy '69

And finally, the track-by-track discussion of the CD I did with 53rd & 3rd

I had a great time writing that last one, by the way. I hope you check it out.

As winter approaches, we've got a ton of cool shows around the upper Midwest coming up, so look out for Earth Van chugging into your town! Emphasis on "chugging". Until next time, amigos!

Florida Time, Promises To Deliver re-release (with bonus tracks)...

FLORIDA TIME

Hello! As I type this, I'm about 18 hours away from getting on the airplane that'll take me to Florida for Fest 14 in Gainesville, PreFest 3 in Tampa, and PreFest Invasion 2 in St. Augustine. And that's quite a lineup of Festing! Check out the links:

Pre-Fest Invasion at Nobby's! (St. Augustine) - we play Wednesday night.

PreFest 3 in Ybor City (Tampa)! - we play Thursday at 4:10pm indoors at Tequila's.

Fest 14 (Gainesville)! - we play Sunday at 7:10pm at Durty Nelly's.

PROMISES TO DELIVER CD REISSUE ON RUM BAR RECORDS

At Fest 14 (and PreFest 3), you'll be able to get your hands on something other than coozied PBR - that's right, Promises To Deliver has been rereleased by Rum Bar Records on compact disc! And not only is this the first official release of Promises on CD, we've added some bonus tracks for ya! We collected the songs from our Play Loud 7" and our split 7" with Your Pest Band, dredged up a never-heard-before outtake from Promises, and tacked on an early version of "Julie" featuring a backwards guitar solo. Trippy!

So, click this link to our page at the Rum Bar website to get more info, and when the time comes, get your deluxe copy of Promises To Deliver at our merch table at Fest 14, or mailorder anytime from Rum Bar! Salud!

Fest 14 Is Coming...

Hello, Blue Diamond Land! I hope your autumn is going well. The leaves are turning, there is a refreshing chill in the night air, baseball teams are setting their starting rotations for the playoffs... what does it all mean? Why, it means Gainesville Fest is almost here! Check out the Official Website and get your passes now!

This year's Fest looks really, really, really fucking good. They finally got Andrew W.K., do I need to add any more info?

Actually, I do want to say a couple things. First off, Sam Beer will be playing two sets this year - his other band, Dingus, is playing Fest! They're touring there with their/our friends Braver (also from Mpls). Go see both bands in the course of your Festing, you won't regret it!

And then there's the matter of our show. How can I explain this properly... first off, playing Fest is always, ALWAYS great. But to borrow from Animal Farm, some greats are greater than others. Some years, we have looked at ourselves in the mirror at Durty Nelly's early on a Fest Sunday afternoon and wondered just how the hell we were going to go onstage in half an hour. And every time, somehow, we pull it off. The room is full of all our friends, cheering and singing along, and it feels great to be alive! Which definitely is not how we felt when we woke up.

(And then there's the time the fire alarm - and therefore the power - went off during the fourth song one year, and that was how our set ended. Despite the fact that we finished the song unplugged, me riding on a friend's shoulders around the room, which was fun, I suppose I'll admit that I would have just preferred to finish the set with electricity and no fire alarm.)

This year? THIS YEAR IS GREAT. We play Sunday at Durty Nelly's, comfortably late enough to be assured of completely conquering our hangovers. And the lineup for our show is insane. This lineup feels like the Fest mavens read my mind and discerned the bands I would want to play with at a show at Fest, AND THEN MADE THAT THE LINEUP. Look at this:

12:10 AM - 12:40 AMWhiskey & Co.
11:20 PM - 11:50 PMArliss Nancy
10:30 PM - 11:00 PMBlacklist Royals
9:40 PM - 10:10 PMTwo Cow Garage
8:50 PM - 9:20 PMMutts
8:00 PM - 8:30 PMLee Bains III & The Glory Fires
7:10 PM - 7:40 PMNato Coles and the Blue Diamond Band
6:20 PM - 6:50 PMNinja Gun
5:30 PM - 6:00 PMBrian Wahlstrom
4:40 PM - 5:10 PMWaylon Thorton & The Heavy Hands
3:50 PM - 4:20 PMRivernecks
3:00 PM - 3:30 PMThe Ones To Blame
2:10 PM - 2:40 PMThose Crosstown Rivals
1:20 PM - 1:50 PMThe Record Collection

Yes, that's our show at Fest. True, we are not on the same show as Andrew W.K., but as the late great Yogi Berra once said, you can't win them all sometimes*.

Allright, get your Fest 14 passes now, and let's party onward, straight to hell and back! In other news, our live album is still slated to come out this year. Meanwhile, the excellent Rum Bar Records is releasing a deluxe version of Promises To Deliver on CD, with bonus tracks that should be out in the next month or two as well, maybe in time for Gainesville! So you'll want to monitor that situation closely. Check out Rum Bar Records's bandcamp page where you can listen to a ton of great power pop, rock'n'roll, punk rock, garage, etcetera ad infinitum. Great stuff!

Salud,

Tour To Awesome Fest IX... And Bill!

Hello everybody, hope you're well! Here in the Twin Cities, it's the hottest weekend of the year. Yeah, but we don't feel too bad, we all still remember how it was on tour in Georgia, Florida, Alabama... yeah, we don't feel too bad!

Ok, first big item: awhile back, we announced that in the (then) near future, Kyle Sando would be stepping down from full-time bass guitar duties in the Blue Diamond Band to focus on some other projects he's got cooking. Well, the passing of the bass guitar torch is now official. Bill Rohla - some call him "The Ayatollah of Rock'n'Rollha" - has taken up the mighty task of bringing the party*! Last night, Kyle Sando played a rockin' set with us, then handed Bill the bass. Bill played a shorter set, and then we brought Kyle back up mid-song during "Runnin' From The Law" to finish the song. Then we played "The Cowboy Song" by Thin Lizzy, because why the hell wouldn't we? So, we thank you, Kyle, for making the Blue Diamond Band what it was and what it is. And you're welcome onstage with us anytime!

Second, we are about to embark upon a tour, west to Awesome Fest Nine in San Diego. We love Awesome Fest and love heading out there every year to see a billion great bands, a trillion friends from around the continent and globe, and party down! Information about Awesome Fest can be found at the official website. Click now!

*"The bass player has the party." - Paddy Costello of Dillinger Four, one of my favorite of his many quotable quotes, mainly because it's so very, very true. Bass=party. No bass=no party.

Recap: The Ottawa Explosion... And Beyond! Tour Was Amazing

Hi, everyone! We have just concluded our tour to Ottawa Explosion And Beyond, with tons of cool shows around the Upper Midwest/Great Lakes and a few in the Northeast USA, and of course the first-ever shows the Blue Diamond Band has played in Canada! Roughly 4,454 miles (or 7,168 km) later, we are home and prepping for D4th Of July...

Thanks to everyone who came out to the shows! Some of our best times on the road happened on this tour. The three Canadian shows were SO FUN! We swooped Luke up from the airport in Toronto and played a killer show at The Magpie for our FIRST CANADIAN SHOW EVER. Ottawa Explosion was everything it lived up to be, with all those great bands who can't always just cross the border and come to the Twin Cities every week, ya know? The night in Montreal ending after the "hangover" show under the flyover, with pizza, Tremblay Beer, and singin'? That's my kind of night. (And in the morning, poutine, naturalement!).

Playing with Toys That Kill and/or Underground Railroad To Candyland four nights out of five starting in Ottawa was amazing! Those bands are so good... but TTK's set in Brooklyn at Acheron was one for the books. What a night that was! With Shellshag and Benny & the Jet Rodriguez and Hatrabbits... no wonder the place was at capacity.

We ran out of LPs on this tour... not once but twice! Thanks Mike Dumps for being on the ball and getting the first batch to Detroit in time, but there was no way we could've anticipated how hungry for our little album Canada was going to be. Sorry, Boston - next time we'll make sure we've got some vinyl for ya!

Daniel James (Indonesian Junk, Chinese Telephones, Daniel James Gang, more) filled in on bass for this tour, and did an incredible job of it, too. My old comrade-in-arms from my beloved hometown of Milwaukee WI truly lived up to his royal moniker: The King Of Rock And Roll. Here's a picture of us all together in Toronto next to a sign that "someone" altered... (l to r: Nato, Sam, Daniel, Luke, Mike)

This tour started strong, was strong up the middle, and ended strong - if a bit poignantly. Normal, Illinois has, for the past four years, been an ill-kept secret powerhouse for touring bands thanks to Zak and his Firehouse Pizza Pub. Everybody from Lucero to the Chill Dawgs have passed through over the years, and always the city and people have made the bands feel so welcomed and celebrated! Now, Firehouse has ceased doing rock'n'roll shows. We were honored to play the final show at Firehouse, and we're sad to see it become merely a place that serves food and drinks... no more of Thee Spirit Of Rock'n'Roll. Thank you for everything over the years, Zak and Firehouse and Normal!

And on that note, the tour dates for our next run are up now on the right side of this page. Check 'em out - we're going to Florida in July!

That's all,
-Nato

p.s. thanks to Suki Nelson for taking us to PNC Park in Pittsburgh for that Pirates/White Sox game!

The Kyle Sando Era Will Be Coming To An End

Hello, everybody, and here is some very big news in Blue Diamond Land. We're about to begin a huge summer of shows and tours. So, let me get this out there, for all of you who are gonna come see us play.

Like the title says, the Kyle Sando Era of the Blue Diamond Band is officially going to end. Not as of yet, but... well, here is the deal. Kyle and I put our heads together and came up with this official statement:

"Kyle Sando, longtime and essentially the only bass player of the Blue Diamond Band who matters, has announed that he is dialing back his full-time role in the band, as a result of his choosing to focus on other creative endeavors in life such as journalism and activism - our band has been so active and busy lately that he had to make a choice, and everyone feels it's the right one. We're in the process of confirming his successor - look for that announcement very soon. Until we name our new bassist, Kyle will be playing most of our shows locally, and tours will be handled as they arise."

Again, this transition is entirely 110% friendly and understood as necessary on everyone's part. We've been steady rollin' with Kyle for a good 4+ years now, many records and a great album under our collective championship belt, and he will always have a place onstage and backstage with the Blue Diamond Band. We love ya, Kyle! The Tower Of Power!

(EDITED) Two last bits of unrelated news: 1.) We are touring to Florida and Slop Fest in Athens GA at the end of July, that tour starts Friday July 24th and the dates will be announced very soon; 2.) The tracks we recorded for our live album are sounding like something we might be able to get out there by Fest this year... we've got our fingers crossed, now cross yours too!

Thanks,
-Nato

There Are Too Many Fest-Type Good Nato Coles Shows Coming Up

Hi everyone - Happy April, happy baseball season, hope you're all doing well! It's time for us as rock'n'rollers to tackle the pressing issue that confronts us: the number of excellent music festivals/block parties/etc. that we are playing in the near future.

First up: Saturday April 18th, we play the Hymie's Record Store Day Block Party. Insanely, we kick this thing off at 11am! Check out the Facebook event page. Many cool bands, much fun to be had... Not mentioned on the fb page: Gandhi Mahal is catering the event. My favorite Indian food in the Twin Cities? HELL YEAH!

Next: Winter's Over Music Fest, in Abercrombie ND! That's no more than half an hour from Fargo, fyi. It's the weekend of April 24th and 25th. We headline on Friday April 24th! This is an awesome lineup of rock'n'roll, folk, essentially just good Americana stuff! Check out the official website. And get your weekend passes now, because with how warm April has been so far, you KNOW it's going to be a GORGEOUS WEEKEND!

After that: One Last Party! Minneapolis MN. A bajillion great punk bands (such as Iron Chic, Direct Hit, The Slow Death, Arms Aloft, so many more...) are playing this four-day fest from Thursday May 7th through Sunday May 10th. We play Friday the 8th. Weekend passes are running out - go get them HERE, and check out the Facebook event page, too!

Still not done: The Art-A-Whirl Weekend in Northeast Mpls is approaching! May 15th, 16th, and 17th, the neighborhood explodes with music and fun at tons of clubs, house parties, art galleries... and breweries. We're playing Indeed Brewing Co.'s Whirlygig 2015 on Sat. May 16th! That lineup is so killer, with Mark Mallman, American Scarecrows, Rupert Angeleyes, and more. Check out the Facebook event page!

And finally: The Memory Lanes Block Party 2015 looms as large as anything coming up. If you live in the Twin Cities area, you've probably been to one of these. From Sat. May 23rd to Mon. May 25th, Memory Lanes has music blastin' through the Hub Of Hell - and we play the Trashmen Afterparty inside on Sunday night (the 24th)! Did I mention we are sorta technically on the same bill as THE TRASHMEN??? And the lineup is all killer, no filler Twin Cities rocker heavyweights! Check out the Facebook event page!

Phew! That's it. I hope I haven't forgotten anything. Naturally, we have "regular" shows coming up, too - check 'em out on the right hand side of this page.

Tacos,

March Update

Hi everybody in Blue Diamond Land, hope you're all well and having some fun out there as the weather gets tolerable and people in Minnesota go CRAZY when the thermometer hits 50 degrees F...

Although we have taken a few weeks off from playing shows, starting with the last weekend in March, we begin a string of weekends where we have shows at least one day of every weekend until June! Pretty crazy. So make sure you keep checking the SHOWS over on the right-hand side of the page.

We're playing Winter's Over Music Fest in Abercrombie, North Dakota! It's April 24th and 25th, and we play on the 24th. Get your weekend passes now! Tons of great bands, too. Here's the website: https://www.wintersovermusicfestival.com/

More: although they aren't listed on this page because all the details still need to be worked out, right here in the beautiful Twin Cities, we're playing two excellent music festivals in early May. The weekend of May 8th and 9th, we are playing the ridiculous and morbid One Last Party punk rock fest, put together by Jesse Thorson of The Slow Death to honor the upcoming "death" and "funeral" of his bandmate Dave Strait. Here's the link to the proper facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/onelastparty. Punk rock fans, I HIGHLY encourage you to attend this thing. Look at that goddamn lineup! Jesse is a genius, and an idiot! He got Radon. RADON. Bow down to him.

And every May, northeast Mpls has a neighborhood festival called Art-A-Whirl. Multiple venues, all within walking distance, hosting myriad bands... including Nato Coles & the Blue Diamond Band! We're playing the show at the Indeed Brewery on Saturday May 16th. The lineup has leaked, so if you're chomping at the bit to see who else is playing, go do your homework! I haven't been told to post anything yet other than that we are playing, so I'm not gonna!

This June, we're touring east, and our main goal? Ottawa Explosion! Guess what city it's in? Yep! The Blue Diamond Band will cross our first international border, and we're gonna have a blast and donuts and beer! Ottawa Explosion is an insanely cool fest with tons of rock'n'roll of the punk/garage/power-pop flavor, and we are honored to play. Check out the website! http://ottawaexplosion.blogspot.com/. We'll also be playing cities in the east Midwest, all the way to NYC and Boston. So, keep an eye out, old weird America!

Our Grumpy's residency went wonderfully! Thanks to everyone who came out to it. The bar has assured me that we will be back next February if we want, so lock that one down on your 2016 calendar.

Last thing: baseball is back, Opening Day is coming up... Let's go to a game sometime!

Tacos,
-Nato

Huge Big Update (Live Album, Grumpy's DT Residency, Karaoke, and more)

Hello!
Hi everybody, here we are in mid-late January with a HUGE BIG UPDATE for y'all! It's been awhile since I updated this website, so this is going to be quite a news dump, as they say. As you probably know if you've been keeping up to any extent on us, we've been playing all the time. All. The. Time. It rules! And we're not about to let our foot off the pedal. Check out the massively updated SHOWS section on the right to see when we're next to be heading your way.

Live Album:
First big item: we're recording a live album! We'll be recording it at our Grumpy's DT residency in February. A little more info... Over the years, we've played a number of songs from older bands of mine (Used Kids, Radio Faces, even Modern Machines), as well as had a certain number of songs by other artists and bands creep into our setlists on the semi-regular. We'd never put any of these on a studio album. But we feel like there should be a Blue Diamond Band version of this batch of tunes, too. We've decided therefore that these songs - since they are currently only performed live - should be the foundation of a live record, a high-quality, high-energy live LP/full-length.

Grumpy's Residency:
And as the title of this update says, we're doing a residency at downtown Grumpy's in Minneapolis all February long. Every Saturday night, we'll be playing two sets, along with some special guest bands from around the way who we love rockin' with. Check out the SHOWS section for the details.

Live Band Karaoke:
On the third Saturday of February - the 21st - we will be reviving Live Band Karaoke (hosted by D.J. Sinclair!), so get ready to sing, dance, and party - with the Blue Diamond Band as your backing band! Here's how it works, if you are unfamiliar:
1. You pick two or three songs that you might like to sing, and email them to natopaisano@gmail.com. We recommend picking songs that you might not be able to sing at a "regular" karaoke night. Past examples would be the Dead Milkmen, the Hulk Hogan Theme Song, the Ramones, NOFX, that sort of thing. Oh, and be sure to specify if you need to sing earlier or later in the night, as there will be two sets.
2. Once we get your requests, we'll pick the one that best suits this format, and we'll let you know which one we'll learn for ya.
3. Then, when it's Live Band Karaoke night, just come on down and wait for your name to be called, because...
4. When your name is called, come up to the stage area, join Nato Coles & the Blue Diamond Band, grab a microphone, and sing your request while we perform the song live!
It's always awesome, trust me. This is the fourth or fifth time we've done this. We also have a number of covers that we just know, and these will be posted all around the room on the night of February 21st. If you want to sing one of these, let D.J. Sinclair know. Even if you made a request via email, we might be able to get you a second song for the night, if you pick it off the list!

More:
The future is here. Follow Nato Coles on Twitter! @NatoColes. We're still writing new songs, learning them, bashing them into decent shape... another proper album is definitely in the works, though not until after our planned live LP. No major tours until late spring, but plenty of regional weekend stuff is coming up. Keep checking this website! I'll update the SHOWS section regularly. We do have one more piece of big news to announce in not-so-long from now, but at the moment I'm going to keep it under wraps.

Also, some of you might recall the photo of Taylor Swift in the December issue of Lucky Magazine in which Promises To Deliver is visible, photobombing the scene?

Again, this was a real photo. It was taken at Co-Op 87 Records in Brooklyn. Well, I finally got around to a proper response. So, here ya go! And stay tuned, because 2015 is going to be a very exciting year for Blue Diamond Land!

Naters gonna Nate Nate Nate Nate Nate. Cheers!
